Suffrage Signatures

“Suffrage Signatures” will commemorate the anniversary year of the 15th Amendment,which gave women the right to vote, serve on juries, and take part in public life, in the historic Chapel of Woodlawn Cemetery, the final resting place of prominent Suffragettes, among them  Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Alva Belmont, Cary Chapman Catt, Mary Garrett Hay,  and Gloria Vanderbilt Whitney.   After the performance and talk in Woodlawn’s Chapel,  we are invited to stroll Woodlawn’s magnificent lawns, admire its landscaping. amd to visit its historical graves and crypts.  The cemetery’s unrivaled collection of monuments—including over 1300 mausoleums– were designed by legendary American architects, landscape designers, and sculptors. The work of McKimMead & WhiteCarrere & HastingsBeatrix FarrandLouis Comfort Tiffany, and Daniel Chester French graces Woodlawn’s grounds.

Commissioned and performed by Canta Libre Chamber Ensemble, under a grant from HumanitiesNY, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Suffrage Signatures focuses on the inner lives of these New York pioneers for women’s rights through music, reproductions and explication of their private correspondence and carefully curated and researched introductory remarks.

Woodlawn Cemetery is a National Historic Landmark, easily accessible by car or public transportation.   Luminaries buried there also include such major American public figures such as Herman Melville, Joseph Pulitzer, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, George M. Cohan, W.C. Handy, Coleman Hawkins, Max Roach, Illinois Jacquet, Hideyo Noguchi, Fiorello LaGuardia, Robert Moses and Jay Gould.  The cemetery’s unrivaled collection of monuments—including over 1300 mausoleums– were designed by legendary American architects, landscape designers, and sculptors.
