“Suffrage Signatures” will commemorate the anniversary year of the 15th Amendment,which gave women the right to vote, serve on juries, and take part in public life, in the historic Chapel of Woodlawn Cemetery, the final resting place of prominent Suffragettes, among them Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Alva Belmont, Cary Chapman Catt, Mary Garrett Hay, and Gloria Vanderbilt Whitney. After the performance in Woodlawn’s Chapel, we are invited to stroll Woodlawn’s magnificent lawns, admire its landscaping. amd to visit its historical graves and crypts. The cemetery’s unrivaled collection of monuments—including over 1300 mausoleums– were designed by legendary American architects, landscape designers, and sculptors. The work of McKim, Mead & White, Carrere & Hastings, Beatrix Farrand, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Daniel Chester French graces Woodlawn’s grounds. Suffrage Signatures – Preview Performance
“Suffrage Signatures,” meant to commemorate the anniversary year of the 15th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote, serve on juries, and take part in public life was commissioned and will be performed by Canta Libre Chamber Ensemble, under a grant from HumanitiesNY. Funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Suffrage Signatures focuses on the inner lives of these New York pioneers for women’s rights through music, reproductions and explication of their private correspondence and carefully curated and researched introductory remarks. Composed in 2020 in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote, Suffrage Signatures is a four movement chamber work which brings the private lives and intimate relationships of iconic New York suffragettes to life through music. “Don’t Write to Me” is one of Wallach’s Obligato Songs, duets for voice and unusual instruments. Here, the Heckelphone is featured, performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony‘s contrabasson and heckelphone virtuoso, James Rodgers, demonstrating and discussing the instrument’s unique qualities and timbre as part of the New World Symphony’s BLUE Project. In this rare opportunity at the New World Symphony, Maestro Rodgers will introduce the Heckelphone, explore its origins, its uses and its unique, rich baritone timbre. Audience members will be encouraged to participate by asking questions and taking part in post-presentation discussions.

Its use of double-stop drones throughout represents the constant presence of God, even when the melody of His song is neither audible nor clear. The Tiger’s Tail, an orchestral prelude, will be broadcast on Marvin Rosen’s Classical Discoveries on wprb.com and on the radio at 103.3 FM, Princeton NJ as part of his “Scratch Time-All About Cats” annual broadcast. Oct 25, 2023 The Tiger’s Tail, like most of Wallach’s music, it depicts some specific psychological landscapes. Here, the emotional scene is that of the apprehension and excitement which can suddenly wake a dreamer in the dark hours of early morning and make sleep impossible with endlessly running thoughts. The title refers to the expression “to catch a tiger by the tail,” with its intimations of danger and anxiety, its promise of imminent excitement, and its futile longing for repose. A tiger’s tail, itself, can also be imagined: luxuriant fur silken, plushy and dramatically striped; its motion alternating between the soft sensuality of languorous furls and sharp, sudden lashes of malicious playfulness, unpredictably mounting anger, […]
